A cross-cutting theme at Medfeminiswiya and at the heart of our feminist editorial line, the violence enacted against women journalists has been documented for years by our correspondents on both shores of the Mediterranean. Sadly, it is one of the realities that unites the experiences of our contributors. Through news articles, interviews, investigations, feature reports, opinion pieces, and personal testimonies, Medfeminiswiya examines these forms of violence through a wide range of journalistic formats. Our work is grounded in two fundamental principles: journalistic ethics and feminist commitment.
If the challenges women face while practicing journalism on the northern shore of the Mediterranean have repeatedly been highlighted on our platform, it is because right-wing forces, populist movements, and patriarchal ideologies have gained significant ground in recent years. Conditions are even more severe in the South. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the SWANA region remains the most dangerous in the world for journalists.
RSF points to several factors behind this reality: wars and the destruction of newsrooms, particularly in Gaza, restrictive laws, economic pressure and media closures, arbitrary detention, and targeted violence against journalists. Since October 2023, nearly 200 journalists have been killed in Gaza by the Israeli army, including at least 35 women who lost their lives while carrying out their work. As a result, Gaza has become the territory with the highest number of journalists killed anywhere in the world over the past three years.
